Start with an example. A weak introduction can cause readers to lose interest inyour essay from the start, whereas a strong introduction will engage yourreaders and make them want to continue reading. This page provides suggestionsto help you write strong introductions. It is not the only format for writing an essay, of course, but it is a useful model for you to keep in mind, especially as you begin to develop your composition skills. Having a well-written introduction is critical to a successful essay.

In a very short essay (less than 1000 words), for example, there is not much room to give a full and detailed context or structure. A longer essay has room for greater detail.
