He was born in 1483. At the encouragement of his father, hewas determined to become a lawyer. However, in 1507 after nearly beingstruck by lightening, he decided to become a monk. He entered amonastery in 1505 and was ordained a priest in 1507. Luther was assignedto teach at the University of Wittenberg in 1508, where he would spendhis entire career. Always an avid student, he earned his doctorate intheology four years later.In 1510 he visited Rome and was appalled by the behavior of churchofficials and the sale of indulgences.
