His father was a copper miner. Luther studied at the University of Erfurt and in 1505 decided to join a monastic order, becoming an Augustinian friar. He was ordained in 1507, began teaching at the University of Wittenberg and in 1512 was made a doctor of Theology. Luther spent his early years in relative anonymity as a monk and scholar. Luther,who would be exiled in the months following the Diet of Worms Council in1521 that was designed to martyr him, would translate theNew Testament into German for the first time from the 151 Greek-Latin NewTestament of Erasmus, and publish it in September of 1522.Luther also published a GermanPentateuch in 1523, and another edition of theGerman New Testament in 1529.
Luther proposed an academic discussion of the practice and efficacy of indulgences in his Ninety-five Theses of 1517.
