Tensile test stress strain curve
Two vises apply tension to a specimen by pulling at it, stretching the specimen until it fractures. In other words, tensile strength resists tension (being pulled apart), whereas compressive strength resists compression (being pushed together). Ultimate tensile strength is measured by the maximum stress that a material can withstand while being stretched or pulled before breaking.
It is unique for each material and is found by recording the amount of deformation (strain) at distinct intervals of tensile or compressive loading (stress). ITensile Test ExperimentOne material property that is widely used and recognized is the strength of a material. The material has known dimensions, like length and cross-sectional area. We then begin to apply weight to the material gripped at one end while the other end is fixed.
We keep increasing the weight (often called the load or force) while at the same time measuring the change in length of the sample. Tensile TestOne can do a very simplified test at Dr.
